Races!

July 20, 2009

Last Thursday I made a mini breakthrough at the track. After stinking up the 10 & 40 lap races, I put my head back in the game for the Miss & Out. One of my teammates offered up some advice: get up front. And guess what, I did. I didn’t stay there, but they all had to go around me. And that meant I stayed in the race one sprint longer than I ever have! Sweet. My teammate rocked it to the win. She pretty much kicks major ass. Soon I hope to at least kick some minor ass.

Saturday brought the Tour of Granite Country Road Race. The weather – cold and windy. The course, scenic country roads. I tell you what, it was hard! I pushed myself to stay in the pack and kept it in my head to just hop on someone’s wheel and stick with it. I did exactly that. I hung in there through two uphill chases, and after a third uphill chase left me sucking wind, I fell behind. We completed the first lap, and I let my head get the better of me and threw in the towel. I didn’t want to end up in too tired to continue in the middle of nowhere. I averaged 21 mph up those hills and against that wind, so I’m pleased with my physical work. I just wish I would have kept my mind strong. I think I would have managed a decent finish.

On another note, I did find myself wedged between two riders. We made full contact but talked through it and remained upright. Close one.

I’m ready to kick it at the track Thursday night. My head will be in the game.
